A dredge pump contains a pump casing and an impeller. The impeller is mounted in the pump casing and connected to the drive motor via a gearbox and shaft. The front part of the pump casing is sealed with a suction cover and connected directly to the suction pipe of the dredger. The discharge port of the dredge pump is located near the top of the dredge pump and is connected to a separate discharge line.

The dredge pump is designed to draw sediment, debris and other hazardous materials from the surface layer into the suction pipe and transport the material through the pipe to the discharge site. Metal and/or rubber pump bushings are used to combat the erosion of solid particles found in the slurry. Metal slurry pump housings are usually made of carbide to resist erosion caused by increased pressure and circulation. Sometimes wear-resistant steel is used on the pump casing so that the pump can be welded if repairs are needed.

Pumping slurry can cause excessive wear and tear on the pump and its components as the mud can clog the suction and discharge lines.

A study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry in 2019 sought to examine the effects of titanium dioxide on intestinal inflammation. Researchers did this by feeding rats titanium dioxide nanoparticles and found that, after the course of two to three months, the animals had lower body weights and induced intestinal inflammation. The researchers also found the nanoparticles altered gut microbiota composition and aggravated chronic colitis. The rats also experienced reduced populations of CD4+T cells (which are cells that help organize immune responses by prompting other immune cells to fight infection), regulatory T cells, and white blood cells in mesenteric lymph nodes. The researchers wrote: “Dietary TiO2 nanoparticles could interfere with the balance of the immune system and dynamic of gut microbiome, which may result in low-grade intestinal inflammation and aggravated immunological response to external stimulus, thus introducing potential health risk.”
